Prolotherapy

Prolotherapy is a newer technology which uses the body's natural inflammation response to stimulate healing. Dextrose (a type of sugar) is injected into ligaments, joints or tendons. This acts as an irritant and triggers wound healing. New collagen is formed, which is the material of tendons a ligaments. This new collagen shrinks as it develops resulting in a tighter tendon or ligament.

Prolotherapy has been around for a long time, but until recently was not used for tendons, and musculoskeletal disorders. Since this use is newer, there are studies being done to evaluate prolotherapy effects. Currently there are many studies underway and our knowledge of prolotherapy will change in the future. At this point, studies have shown value for using prolotherapy in certain tendons, plantar fasciitis, Osgood Schlatter disease and other diseases of growth areas in children and potentially epicondylitis (tennis elbow). In the future there will be more evidence guiding our treatment. Beware of clinics promising results without evidence. Each patient and each condition needs to be evaluated and the potential for a good outcome will be discussed.
